Overview

An alternative SKU (also known as a SKU alias) allows you to reference the same product using a different name or code. This is helpful for improving clarity, supporting internal naming conventions, or aligning with customer-facing terminology—without creating duplicate products.

When to Use an Alternative SKU

  • A product is known by different SKU across teams or regions

  • Customers use a common or legacy name instead of the system SKU

  • You want clearer reporting or easier product lookup

  • You are migrating from old SKUs to new standardized ones

Step-by-step: Add an Alternative SKU (Alias)

  1. Open Luminous

    • From the left sidebar, click Inventory

    • Click SKUs

  2. Find the primary SKU

    • In the SKUs page, click into the SKU search/filter field

    • Type the primary SKU (the one that should remain the “main” SKU)

    • Press Enter (or wait for results to refresh)

  3. Open the SKU record

    • In the results table, click the SKU row (or click the SKU link) to open the SKU’s detail page

  4. Scroll to the “Alternate SKUs” section

    • Make sure you’re on the Details tab (default)

    • Scroll down until you see Alternate SKUs

  5. Open the Alternate SKU editor

    • Click the edit icon (small red icon) next to Alternate SKUs

    • A popup appears titled “Update SKU Alternate SKUs”

  6. Add the alias

    • Click inside the input field labeled Alternate SKU

    • Type the alias / alternate SKU you want to add

    • Click ADD

  7. Confirm + close

    • After clicking ADD, the new alias should appear in the popup list

    • Click the X (close) in the top-right of the popup to exit
