This importer supports baseline products, master SKUs, variant SKUs, alternate SKUs, kits, kit components, and BOMs, making large data imports significantly faster and more efficient.

With the Unified Importer, new records do not need to exist in Luminous beforehand. As long as the data is included in the file, it will be created automatically during import.

What can be imported

The Unified Importer supports the following data types in one file:

  • Products (baseline / master SKUs)

  • Variant SKUs

  • Alternate SKUs

  • Kits

  • Kit components

  • Bills of Materials (BOMs) and BOM components

Before you begin

Before using the Unified Importer, an API key must be generated and saved.

Generate an API key

  1. Navigate to Integrations.

  2. Generate a new API key.

  3. Copy the API key.

  4. Save the integration.

Add the API key to the importer

  1. Go to Tools.

  2. Select Import.

  3. Open Luminous Unified Importer. Click for the cogwheel to paste the API Token.

  4. Paste the API key.

  5. Click Test Connection.

  6. Click Save Configuration.

Download and prepare the template

  1. Use the Scrubber tool to get the exact file format.

    • Please refer to this article: Shopify Data Scrubber

  2. In the Unified Importer, download the import template.

  3. Use the template to add all products, variants, alternates, kits, and BOMs.

Template guidelines

  • Row Type must be an exact match.

  • Products require:

    • SKU name

    • Product name

    • Description

    • Category

  • Variant options can be added directly in the file. Variants do not need to be pre‑created in Luminous.

  • Variants require:

    • Variant SKU

    • Variant product name

    • Parent SKU

  • Alternate SKUs require:

    • Alternate SKU name

    • Parent SKU

  • Kits require:

    • Kit SKU

    • Kit product name

    • Category

  • Kit components require:

    • Component SKU

    • Parent kit SKU

  • BOMs require:

    • BOM SKU or name

    • Component SKU

New SKUs, kits, and BOMs will be created automatically during import, even if they do not already exist in the system.

Upload and map the file

  1. Drop and Upload the completed excel template into the Unified Importer.

  2. Review the auto‑mapped columns.

  3. Click Apply Mapping.

The preview screen displays a summary of:

  • Products

  • Variants

  • Alternates

  • Kits

  • Kit components

  • BOMs

If any issues are detected, the system will show rows with list of all products including products with errors. The system will not allow you to execute the import with any existing error. In order to proceed with the import, you need to correct the errors on your excel file and click start over in Luminous. From there re-do the entire import process.

Below are the possible errors:

  • API tokens (copied the encrypted token instead of the unencrypted one). You may need to delete the old API and generate a new one on Integration.

  • Need correction on the excel file.

  • Duplicated SKU

Once all the error is correct, click the start over and begin uploading new file.

Execute the import

  1. Confirm the preview data is correct.

  2. Click Execute Import.

The importer will process all valid rows and create the associated records in Luminous.

Verify imported data

After the import completes, verify the following:

  • Kits include their associated kit components automatically.

  • Master SKUs display their variants.

  • Products show alternate SKUs when applicable.

  • BOMs include all assigned component SKUs.

Performance notes

  • The Unified Importer supports up to 15,000 line items.

  • Imports of this size typically complete in approximately 15 minutes, which is significantly faster than previous import methods.
